How to Write a CV That Gets Interviews in Nigeria: The Complete Guide for Job Seekers

Finding a job in Nigeria has become increasingly competitive. Every day, thousands of graduates, professionals, and job seekers apply for the same opportunities. Yet, despite having the required qualifications, many applicants never receive interview invitations. One of the biggest reasons for this is a poorly written CV.
Your Curriculum Vitae (CV) is more than just a document. It is your personal marketing tool. It introduces you to potential employers, highlights your qualifications, and convinces recruiters that you are worth interviewing.
Whether you are a fresh graduate, an NYSC member, an intern, or an experienced professional, learning how to write a CV that attracts interviews can significantly improve your chances of securing employment.
In this comprehensive guide, you will learn everything you need to know about writing a professional CV that stands out to Nigerian employers.

What Is a CV?
A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a document that summarizes your educational background, work experience, skills, certifications, achievements, and other professional qualifications.
Employers use CVs to evaluate candidates before deciding who to invite for interviews.
A well-written CV answers important questions such as:
Who are you?
What qualifications do you have?
What experience do you possess?
What skills can you bring to the organization?
Why should the employer consider you?
Your CV is often your first opportunity to make a positive impression.

Why Your CV Matters More Than Ever
Many Nigerian companies receive hundreds or even thousands of applications for a single vacancy.
Recruiters often spend less than one minute reviewing each application.
This means your CV must immediately demonstrate value.
A strong CV can:
Increase your chances of being shortlisted.
Differentiate you from other candidates.
Showcase your strengths and achievements.
Help employers understand your suitability for a role.
Improve your chances of receiving interview invitations.
On the other hand, a poorly written CV may prevent employers from seeing your true potential.

CV vs Resume: Is There a Difference?
Many people use the terms CV and Resume interchangeably.
However, there are slight differences.
CV
A CV provides a detailed overview of your education, work experience, certifications, achievements, and skills.
Resume
A resume is usually shorter and more concise, focusing on information relevant to a specific job.
In Nigeria, most employers request a CV rather than a resume.

Types of CV Formats
Before writing your CV, you should understand the common formats available.

Chronological CV
This is the most widely accepted format.
Your work experience is listed from the most recent position to the oldest.
Best for:
Experienced professionals
Candidates with a consistent career history
Functional CV
This format focuses on skills rather than work experience.
Best for:
Fresh graduates
Career changers
Individuals with employment gaps
Combination CV
This combines elements of both chronological and functional formats.
Best for:
Professionals with strong skills and experience
For most Nigerian job seekers, the chronological format remains the safest choice.

How to Describe Work Experience Effectively
Many applicants simply list responsibilities.
This is a mistake.
Employers want results.

Managed company social media pages.
✅️Strong Statement
Managed company social media pages and increased audience engagement by 35% within six months.
Whenever possible, use numbers and measurable outcomes.
